Christmas is coming!

My days since December stepped in are divided into making products for my Etsy shop and preparing for our early Christmas celebrations.

So shop talk first. I've included Philippine folk art inspired Christmas tree ornaments to my offerings: painted red horses. These horses are usually seen during Christmas and town fiestas back in my tropical island home. They are traditionally made of paper, which in the Philippines is called "taka", shaped into horses and painted bright red. Then it's finished off with simple but bold and colorful patterns.

And in the bright and cheerful category, I also have these adorable pet miniatures - dogs and cats that would make wonderful gifts for pet lovers.

For the non-traditional, I have creepy eye pendants that can be worn as a necklace or forehead accessory.

On the home front, I've been scavenging! It was windy a couple of nights ago and the fir trees were shaking in fright. Lost a lot of their branches and leaves they did. So when I drove past those poor lonely branches, I had an idea.

You see, hubby's Mom and Grandma usually go up in the mountain before the big holiday to get fresh boughs. Grandma would put it up on her fireplace mantel and add Christmas ornaments to them. This inspired me to pick some of the fir tree branches and create our own Christmas boughs!

I also decided to add Christmas stockings to this year's decorations. I went full circle on this one. First I thought I'd make them, then I decided to save myself the trouble so I can concentrate on making gifts. I went to Daiso, the only dollar store or close to a dollar store I know in our vicinity but I did not like what they had. They were surely affordable at $1.50 a piece but I did not like the materials nor the design. They looked too cheap.

Next door  was Joann but even at 60% off, which brought the prices down to $11.99 (if I remember correctly) multiplied by three came up to an amount I would rather save than spend on some nice looking stockings.

But, when I saw that their fleece and other furry fabric were up to 60% discount too, I knew I had to make our own. It was the only way. I wanted our stockings to be bright, furry and plush and there's no way I'm gonna get it cheaper than $5 (which might not have been a realistic target to begin with for ready made items). So after a few minutes of wandering about, deciding on color, I left with $11 worth of fabric: half a yard of some cream, plush furry thing, half yard of red fleece and another half a yard of checkered green, brown and cream fleece. Two days later, I am happy to report, I have homemade stockings that I feel pretty good about.

Made letter clay buttons to add a little interest to the stockings and placed them against little fleece ribbons.

So that makes the final Christmas decor for the year! Now I need to go back to making Christmas gifts! Gotta rush, there's only a few more days to go.

An eye for you

So excited about this new item I'm coming out with - eye on a stick. This is the first batch, my studies, but I'll have more pictures up soon and more designs of eye on a stick available on my Etsy Shop.

Group Caricature for a Going Away Present

I feel like I won an award every time a client emails me their feedback on a clay work or caricature order. More so, when they also share how much their recipients loved the caricature gift.

Nermeen, contacted me from the UAE. They wished to give their boss, who is moving to the USA, a memorable going away token that will remind her of their group, their department and all their hard work and successes. She also requested for the background to reflect the journey of their boss through the landmarks in the background: from Egypt, to the UAE to the USA. After I sent her her the finished artwork, she had it printed on canvas which turned out great.

To Nermeen, thanks for sending the photos and leaving such a lovely review in my OrangeJar Etsy shop!

5 stars from Nermeen:
"Ria is a super Artist with very accurate, fast execution and time management. While others provided longer periods with very exaggerated prices, Ria is providing a very professional service with impeccable timing as well as super attention to details with very cost effective prices. The portrait was for my boss's Farewell and enough to say that my boss said: "This is the most amazing gift that I have received in my life"!! I would recommend Ria to my friends and co-workers"

Pet dog handpainted brooches

Added a new set of hand painted pet dog brooches in my Etsy shop. Like the first batch, these have a thick and glossy resin finish that gives it a nice twinkle when the light hits it right. Plus the resin preserves the painting real good.

My Etsy Shop is open again!

Moving, specially in between countries is no mean feat. Even after the physical move, there's all the adjustments weeks, and even months after.

So, after a very long break, I finally found the time to sit down and focus on my Etsy Shop. The goal is to start simple: post my caricature work. I've been based in the UAE for the last decade and it was my main market. Now, I have to spread my wings even further.

There will not be much reviews or feedback in my Etsy shop even though it is more than a year old. It's been closed for more than half that time and even before that I was not able to focus on marketing it. That is going to change starting right now.

Taddaaa.... Welcome to my OrangeJar Art's Etsy shop - hope you have time to browse!

Make it Vintage

Went to the Deira fish market today expecting it to be congested but it wasn't! We were able to park easily and in the row nearest the entrance too. Didn't see much locals or Arabs but a lot of Asians were shoppping. I guess the locals have done their shopping early and are now celebrating with their families.

I love shopping at the fresh fish market. People are so energetic selling their seafood and produce, the fish are fresh (and very affordable!) and there are so much choices. We ended up with two kilos of crabs at 60AED, two kilos of shrimps also at 60AED, two kilos of tilapia at 40AED and I got an extra kilo of small galunggong for only 5AED! A bunch of different vegetables was on the last of the shopping list and three bags full only cost us 13AED.

We went straight back to Abet & Malen's flat and started cooking lunch. By 1pm we were having a spectacular seafood fest - there was so much, I had a pack to take home with me to enjoy later. Yum. That, however, took up most of the day -  so it's 3:00pm already and I'm just starting my day.

For the last few days, I've been pouring over dozens of digital albums I've collected through the years to select photos that I will put up on OrangeJarArt Etsy shop. I can easily select photos (and artworks I like) but I try to keep one of the Etsy tips in mind: make your shop look cohesive, which I interpret as styled, which means there is a certain look to it. The items and the corresponding product shots should have a signature that when clients see them, they can identify later that it's from your shop.

That is a very good tip. And from an Etsy newbie like me - with tons of products I want to market - very challenging.

OrangeJar started about seven-eight years ago as my portal to offer caricatures online, a place where people can find my samples and get my contact details. Since the beginning I have an integration of various services there, everything I can do - illustrations, paintings, photography - but I never concentrated on marketing them. Until now, and with the addition of other products such as the sculptures and clay-themed postcards. So OrangeJar is officially a mishmash of my services - all related but still very varied.

For example, when it comes to photos, I love portraits -- family, friends, pets, random people I meet through my travels. But I cannot use those photos without a model permit. So I started collecting photos of places I've been to featuring everyday subjects that I wanted to keep forever - red boots on a wet brick road in Denmark, a rusty ship sculpture in a fisherman's wharf in Canada, camels lounging at the Dubai beach and so on and so forth.

Then the next question became, how do I offer these? Which style? "As is" doesn't seem to cut it for me. Black & white? Retro? Vintage? There are so many options. I guess the best way to go about it is to choose the ones I like best, the ones I will hang on my wall. Then the questions came flooding back again - black & white? Retro? Duochrome? Vintage? I like a lot of styles!

But if I put in a number of styles, then my shop will not look cohesive. So, decide I must.

I do have one favorite that I had printed out in canvas and stretched, it's a duochrome image of Malaysia. It's a dramatic scene of the Twin Towers taken from The Revolving Bintang Restaurant on the 18th floor of The Federal KL. It was a cloudy day and while we were waiting for the lunch buffet to start, the sky started to open on the farthest right and you can see the rain starting to pour, the middle panel only had low-hanging burdened clouds, the leftmost panel had the twin towers and beneath all three, the darkened cityscape of KL. Oh wait, why am I describing it? I can just show you:

It looks better in person (if you're wondering, The Kiss (Gustav Klimt) repro is a gift from my artist friend Ysab, you can find her works here).

So that will definitely be one style. The other is vintage. I edit my photos in Photoshop which allows more control - I can tweak it till I'm happy. So I think I've found my happy medium.

Here's a preview of what I've been working on which will soon be available on Etsy (and hint - if you're interested, before it's up, just send me a pm).

OrangeJar watermark will not be in the final print. This is a photo I took 4-5 years ago near the Hilton beach area, edited for that vintage look.

If you're interested in making any of your photos vintage, you can do it manually in Photoshop - the best way is to experiment with your saturation and color settings. You can also add grain or noise (just go to Filter on your menu). And if you want that real aged print look, add scratches and tear marks (a lot of artists offer scratch and tear photos, just Google for them and check that it's a png file so that's it's ready and easy to use. You just add it on top of your photo as another layer, tweak a little bit more and you're all set).

For quick and easy vintage style photos, here are a couple of websites I stumbled over while I was brushing up on how authentic vintage photos really look:
  • Makeretro.com - gives you an option for vintage look, technicolor, lomo and some other tweaks
  • Instantretro.com - haven't tried this one, but it seems as easy as upload photo and click the style you want.
Okay, enough rambling. I seriously need to back up my files first before wading through more digital photos to edit.

Star Wars set is done!

And just in time too!

I did not imagine it would take me more than a week to create all nine characters. Granted I had stuff to do in between, but I really thought this set would go faster.

I am so proud of my babies - is this vanity? I love each one to bits! I almost don't want to see them go. Doesn't help that I love Star Wars. That's the reason why I created the kawaii versions that I displayed at ARTE Time Square two Fridays ago. That's what my client saw and that's why he ordered a full set.

While I was painting last night and earlier today, I've been listening to Etsy Online Labs - they've got a lot of testimonials, workshops, tips, newbie tips, seller guidelines that are really worth listening to. It was quite cool that I'm finishing up an order and learning how to keep my shop up, specially since I'm a newbie on this selling platform and need all the help I can get.

Alrighty, right now, I'm going to take a break. Well, clean up my stuff first, my computer table is a mess - splattered paints and all. Take more photos of the ST set - this is the last time I'm seeing them :( and pack them up for delivery. Hmm... that break must wait. Quick glance at the clock and it's almost five, and delivery is at 6. Sigh. No time after all. Oh well.

They're done and I'm happy.

Birthday party Invitation designs

Ugh. Started my day really late! Woke up dreaming that I'm in a world where two separate group of peoples live - and one couldn't breathe well once they are in the other's boundaries.

Still quite muddled from that. But the day is clearing up... thanks to Mount Province Arabica coffee from my friend Lucy!

I have set aside today to paint the Star Wars set. Need to be done today, as they are all to be delivered tomorrow. Luckily, acrylic and the glaze I use dry up really quickly. It's the painting that will take time with all those itty bitty details.

But before I get to that, I just wanted to post about three items on my Etsy shop - invitation designs for birthdays and other parties. They are available for only 10USD - you get the digital file and you can print it at home or bring it to your printer's. It comes with a complementing Thank You card and four cake topper designs.

All characters are done by OrangeJar and text are customizable. If you want to purchase any of these designs, please send a PayPal payment to orangejar (@) orangejar.com for USD10 and email me the text that needs to go in the card. I will email you proofs for checking and after we've finalized all that, I will send the hi-resolution copy that you can download and print.

More designs to come soon. Thanks for viewing!

OrangeJarArt on Etsy now open!

I have been considering Etsy for the longest time. But it was only a few months ago that I actually signed up to become a seller... then I left the account empty. For weeks now, I've been wanting to post my art prints and clay work but I've been too worried about shipping and packaging so I did nothing.

In the meantime, I've been trying to find the best way to ship out and well, experimenting on packaging.

But I realize now that I have to make the jump. So today, I officially opened my Etsy store. I couldn't take the name OrangeJar anymore - imagine that, somebody beat me to it. So I put in OrangeJarArt. If you want to check it out, just click here. It's a leap of faith, I wasn't ready for it, so there's only one product listed up there and that is my caricature/portrait service.

OrangeJarArt shop and the one and only product listed ;)

Etsy's email confirmation

I know I should have done this a long time ago. It takes eons of time to promote and for a shop to get recognized. But at least, I opened it. I took the plunge. Now, I just have to sort out packing and shipping and I'll be posting more stuff in there.

Here's to hoping for more clients to stumble in my humble shop!
